Dog House Upcycle To A Chicken aka “Chick” House

When our neighbors asked us if we wanted to take this big dog house they were needing to get rid of I did not hesitate because I immediately thought that this would be our new “chick house”.  So our son and my husband “The Viking” went over and carried it back and this was not a little dog house.  It had a roof on it so the first thing my husband did was take the roof off and put a screen lid with hinges on top.  Then he hung the heat lamp above the biddies on a chain so we could slowly raise it up little by little to get them acclimated to going out doors.    My favorite thing that my husband did was that the dog house had a door to the front of it and he had the perfect size plexi-glass to fit right over the doorway.  It’s a chick observation area and he doesn’t even have to leave the house πŸ™‚

They are starting to get a little overcrowded so my husband and I went up to the hardware store to start buying supplies to build them to their new outdoor Coop.  I know they are going to love their new digs!  Also I am cleaning out their chick house constantly and to be completely truthful I am the biggest advocate of moving them to their outdoor quarters.

I am posting pics of our gals I bet you won’t believe how big they all have gotten!

In this picture you may spy our turken “aka” naked neck chicken.  She is fine she just has a naked neck in case you are not familiar with that breed.  All of our chicks are classified as brown egg layers but they did include two exotics in our order.

It’s also that time again!  Time for another Ole’ Saturday Homesteading Trading Post but this week we are going to do something different.  I am going to pick a link up every week to feature the following Saturday so we can all get to know each other a little better and to see more in-depth what we are doing on our homesteads.  Yes I am going to come up with a button and everything but this next week is going to be super busy on the homestead so bear with me either way I can’t wait to feature one of you!

Since my category is wide open as far as homesteading topics as long as your blog topic is rated “G” of course I am just going to choose posts at random.  My goal is that everyone will get featured at some point πŸ™‚  Many of you post and I always think I hope everyone saw that post because it was just incredible.

So link up here and here’s to learning and thinking outside the box as homesteaders!

  1. There’s something really cute about chickens, and it’ll be nice when they can start living outdoors πŸ™‚ I linked up with you this week πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I’ll look forward to visiting some of the other blogs here this week πŸ™‚ Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather πŸ™‚

  2. Chickens are the next step for our urban homestead, and I’m hoping for bees and maybe a goat or two in the future, also. I’ve got a lot more experience with animals than plants. It’s more my comfort zone. We had all these on the farm where I grew up, but I’m realizing that doing this in the city requires a slightly different set of skills. Now we’re reading everything we can get our hands on about keeping animals backyard-style. Love your doghouse repurposing. Love your blog!

    1. Thanks so much! It is so nice to connect with others like you who share our passions! It can be challenging in suburbia to raise chickens etc……I would love a goat for milk but its just not practical for us yet. Thanks for stopping in!

I Love Hearing From All Of You! Thanks for sharing!
