The Thrill Of The Chill: Homemade Banana Icecream

homemade banana icecream
We had no leftovers!

So we have been debating about whether to get rid of our ice-cream/sorbet maker or not?  Should we sell it at the next yard sale or donate it?  We never use it!  So I decided to make some homemade banana ice cream since my daughter and her boyfriend were coming to dinner this past Sunday and put the ice-cream maker to the test and then we could decide if we should keep it.

the ice cream is thickening up

And I decided we were going to keep it a surprise that is until my son walked into the kitchen and had to know what I was making.  Here he is tasting the ice-cream before it was done of course and we all did it was so delicious!

my son loved this home made ice cream!

The beauty of making your homemade ice-cream is you do not have to worry about all the artificial preservatives and additives because you control the quality of the ingredients in your homemade ice cream!

Ingredients:

  • 1 C. Milk
  • 3/4 C. Sugar (we are going to experiment with honey next time)
  • 2 C. Heavy Cream
  • Vanilla to taste I opted for just about a tsp. this time
  • 2 Bananas chopped up into little tiny chunks

Instructions:

  • Chill the milk and the heavy cream.
  • Pour the milk and sugar into a metal bowl and mix for about 2 minutes until sugar is dissolved.
  • Slowly blend in the heavy cream and vanilla and mix for about one more minute.
  • Pour the liquid all into the ice cream-maker and let it start spinning around.
  • Lastly throw in the banana chunks.
  • Our ice-cream maker needs to work for about 20 minutes.
  • Once it’s done I covered it up with wax paper and a rubber band and I froze about 2 hours before serving.
  • Makes 1.5 Quart (This served 5 of us happily with some of us going back for more 🙂

Enjoy!

YUM!

ice cream ready to go into the freezer
This ice cream is ready to go into the freezer for a couple of hours before serving.

This was so good words cannot even describe how delicious it was!  There truly is something about a nice frozen dessert in the summertime!  I should also mention that now a days with ice cream prices not inexpensive at all anymore that homemade ice cream is no longer as expensive of an option as it once was and I am sure that our version of banana ice-cream which makes 1.5 quarts the same as most ice-cream containers these days came in well under most of the major brands because even our bananas were left over from last week and needed to be used up.

bananas that needed using up
You could add more than 2 bananas if you want my husband didn’t want too many bananas in this recipe!

By the way I actually bought this ice cream/sorbet maker for $20.00 off of Craigslist I love a good bargain and it looks like its going to be put to more use this summer.  I suggested we make blueberry ice-cream next Sunday and my son requested we make an Oreo flavor.  So when I told them that I did not like all of the chemicals in the Oreos his response of course was that I could make home-made Oreos…..yes I could couldn’t I?

Have you tried your hand at homemade Oreo’s or homemade ice-cream?  i would love to hear about it.  I did make a completely different version of homemade ice-cream last year that did not include the ice-cream/sorbet maker that I found on Pinterest so there are lots of great recipes out there even if you don’t have your own ice cream maker.

Have a great week everyone!

Fondly,

  1. We don’t have an ice cream maker so we’ve been making the next-best thing – substitute ice cream using frozen bananas, milk & pudding. It’s hot in Texas this time of year & this makes a delicious, cold and trash-free dessert for us. Perfect. Your ice cream looks absolutely delicious!

  3. Oh, that looks yummy! There is a local ice cream stand that got its start making its ice cream with honey. I will be curious when you make it what you think of it. I’ve been considering borrowing my MIL’s machine. This just might be the impetus to do so!
