Homemade Garlic Hummus – Gluten Free

I am so excited to share with all of you my new favorite hummus recipe and I must say it was so delicious, easy to make, and much healthier than hummus you will find in the grocery store and much less expensive. The recipe I am sharing today is basically a double batch but you can cut it in half for your taste and your family’s appetite!

All you  need to  make hummus is chickpeas or garbanzo beans they are relatively inexpensive and for this recipe I used canned chickpeas but you could use dried as well and a few other ingredients you most likely have in your pantry.  The only ingredient I did not have in my pantry is the Tahini which I bought fresh.

I also have to add that my 16-year-old son loves this recipe and this was a child I could not get to eat hummus and he has crossed over to the hummus side 😉

To make your roasted garlic all you need is a couple of heads of garlic, some tin foil, olive oil, and an oven…it’s that simple and you all know I like simple!  I just take some foil and shape it like a boat and twist both ends, place the garlic heads inside and drizzle with olive oil, then I completely wrap the foil package up and place in the oven at 350 degrees for about an hour.  Once they come out let them cool before you handle them they are HOT!

Ingredients:

2 cans of 15 1/2 ounce chickpeas (Drained)

3 heads of roasted garlic (you just need to squeeze them out they will pop out of the holes on the bottom of garlic head)

1/2 to 1 tsp. kosher salt to taste

4 TBSP. olive oil ( you may have to add more to taste)

4 TBSP. Tahini ( I used some fresh I purchased at Trader Joes)

Chives (I used dried) you can toss some in the processor too while your mixing

Juice from one squeezed lemon

Red pepper or Chipotle powder/pepper to taste

Place chickpeas in your food processor, squeeze the roasted garlic out of about 3 garlic heads into your food processor, toss in salt, olive oil, tahini, and juice. Run food processor until it all gets smooth and creamy and add red pepper or chipotle powder/pepper to taste.  I drizzled olive oil and sprinkled with chives before serving.

Since I eat a gluten-free diet my favorite way to eat this wonderful dip is with celery sticks however my son and husband love it with flat bread!

  1. You are so right, Karen… Hummus is one of the easiest things to make…and so good for you too! I’m hoping to try making some with our edamame harvest ( if we get one) I planted one full packet of it so keep your fingers crossed! If it grows, I’ll share the recipe! 🙂
