Crock Pot Apple Butter Just In Time for Thanksgiving

My Very Well Used and Loved Crock Pot

With Thanksgiving coming up and we have been in Apple processing season I have to post about my very favorite and extremely easy recipe for homemade Crock Pot Apple Butter.

The Viking in my life and myself love apple butter on fresh hot yummy biscuits right out of the oven and its also wonderful on toast in the morning but this is a wonderful condiment for fresh hot biscuits on Thanksgiving as well or any other festive holiday.  I think its very small amount of cloves I put in that I grind in my mortar and pestle that really gives it that wonderful holiday taste and aroma!  You don’t need to have a crock pot to make this recipe but since it takes a couple of days it comes in handy!

Apple Butter About Half Way Done

Lil’ Suburban Homestead’s Crock Pot Apple Butter

Peel and core about 16 apples (all apple varieties turn out wonderful!)  My favorite this year has been golden delicious.

Some recipes call for you to add fruit juice but we just add water and depending on the variety for example the golden delicious variety turned out plenty sweet!

I add about 1/2 tsp.  cloves

1 TBSP. or more of cinnamon to taste

1/2 tsp. nutmeg

(some of this you just have to do to your own taste)

and it does call for about 4 cups of sugar but you could use approx. 3 Cups of honey.

We currently do not know have our own source of honey yet so when I need to use this much sweetener I just use sugar.

I also like my apple butter very dark so it takes a while but it turns out just heavenly!

Now you have to be patient……..yep my husband wanted to remind all of you he has to keep taking the lid off and wipe the lid down to remove the moisture.  We will start this after work and it will go all night and all day the next day before its done.

Then you can and process per Ball Book guidelines.  You may also want to try some other type butter recipes…pear butter is wonderful and would also make a welcome addition to your Thanksgiving Table.   I hope you will agree its just wonderful and there is nothing quite like it on a hot biscuit you don’t even need butter!  Enjoy!  Thanks for stopping in!

  1. If you turn the lid sideways the apples evaporate much more quickly and there is not moisture build up on the inside of the lid. Or you prop the lid with chopsticks.

    Love homemade apple butter!

    1. Inga I should have shared in my blog post that I actually do turn the lid from time to time so I am so glad you pointed it out to my readers. I really love your chopstick idea though…how clever! I love it too! Great minds think alike 😉

  2. Need to try this, once I find a really good sale on apples!!!! The younger boy would love this!!!! I’ve also heard that you can fold a couple of paper towels and place on cooker then add lid for the evaporation…… Might be worth trying that.

I Love Hearing From All Of You! Thanks for sharing!
