We are in the honey………honey!

This year since it is our first year harvesting the honey of of our hives.    We decided to start slow to figure this whole thing out and to get our process down.  My husband and I rented the honey extractor from our Bee Keeping club and its a nice big stainless steel harvester so it worked great!

We extracted 10 deep frames just for a start and we got abut 30 lbs. of honey….it was a very exciting evening!  My fingers stayed sticky all evening long but I didn’t mind at all because finally the wait for honey is over.  We are going to be extracting more today and this evening so we should end up with a lot of honey.  Which is a good thing because I have people who have been waiting to purchase some and we were actually just about out of honey.

We did our extracting in the kitchen with an old shower curtain on the floor to catch drips but that was not really necessary since I was helping.  I will keep you all posted to how much honey we extract today!  Such exciting times around our Lil’ Suburban Homestead!

Wishing you all a beautiful week until next time!

Fondly,

  1. Wow! Beautiful harvest of honey. I admire those of you who keep bees, it is such an interesting process and the rewards are certainly large.

    1. It was ALOT of hard work and I don’t own a bee suit in the interest of being economical but The Viking in my life says its time it would have been a lot easier for him if I had been in the bee yard helping him. Thanks so much for stopping in and for the compliment πŸ™‚

  2. Hip Hip Horray! Don’t you just love the way the entire house smells? Oh how I miss my bees. Great post Karen. I can feel all the licky-sticky goodness almost πŸ™‚

    1. Debbie my husband does the heavy lifting with our Bee Keeping and I am so amazed at what a talented bee keeper he has become even though we are both Certified Bee Keepers! He is going to teach me this summer to go in the hives and I am grateful I waited to do this because I have really gotten to know bee keeping through his eyes and it is not something to just jump into Bee Keeping is dangerous whether people want to talk about it or not I actually am going to post soon on the dangers of Bee Keeping not to prevent people from doing it but so they go into it with there eyes wide open! Thanks so much for stopping by Debbie!

  3. When I was growing up on the farm, we had bees. Extraction Day was always my favorite. It’s magical seeing all that amber goodness in those combs, isn’t it? And so delicious! Good for you!

  4. OH, I LOVE honey…especially raw honey. If I lived closer, I’d buy a jar of that honey from you!!! So excited for your family that you have all that nice honey to harvest/eat πŸ˜‰ πŸ™‚ Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather πŸ™‚
