Happy New Year & Gardening Plans

This photo was from a bonfire in Saluda, NC in June 2021.

Happy New Year to all of you! I am rather happy to see 2021 out , but in spite of sadness and loss that occurred this last year for many of us, there were some of what I call lemonade moments throughout the year. Several of them were on camping trips and just in general spending more time in nature and that includes our gardens.

In 2020 when we were in shut down many of us clamored to have small gatherings and were just trying to figure things out in the midst of this global pandemic. In 2021 much of the same continued in the spring, but by summer I felt a sense of bravery and the realization that I had to move on with my life. I could not stay locked down forever and that the Viking and I needed to get back to living. We do still steer clear generally from large gatherings overall but have gone to one or two as life is risky anyway and some things we just didn’t want to miss.

It’s Been a Minute…

It’s been a bit since, I’ve posted, but I am spending a lot of time on school work and when I’m not doing that I’m helping the Viking with putzing and projects around the homestead. And we have upped our camping game and now have a travel trailer that we mostly travel with. Although we recently went to Colonial Williamsburg and I have an entire post about that coming soon. Oh, and I have so many camping adventures to share as we did so much of that during 2020 and 2021.

Today we are going to have our annual pot of brunswick stew and black-eyed peas, but just for a small family gathering. Tonight, we plan on staying in and having a quiet night at home after weeks worth of travel and a wonderful evening listening to local musician and performer Mark Daffer on New Year’s Eve.

Our Gardening Plans for 2022

On to our gardening plans for 2022. We have grown so much spinach and lettuce over the past two years that our plan for winter is to continue to grow more greens. Currently we have spinach, red sails lettuce, mustard greens and kale, along with some onions all doing well in the garden. I am going to get some seeds started in the greenhouse next weekend and by the way since the Viking always has his own plans for his greenhouse. I got my own little “lean to” style greenhouse so I could start our seedlings and keep some of my aloes and other warmth loving plants in. It was inexpensive and not heavy duty, but it does the trick.

We also have a project up ahead in the garden, where the Viking in my life is going to custom build cold frames, similar to the ones that they have in the gardens in Colonial Williamsburg.

A note about our bees…

We are in the middle of deciding to move our bees from the property they are currently at or to keep them there and work with the new owners. We have also received several offers from fellow honey bee lovers to host our bees, which we are so grateful for.

I wish you all a happy new year! Until next time…

Fondly,
